The critical factors considered when designing
the light rail stop for UNSW on Anzac Parade was the volume of people, future
growth, it's impact on the local community and reduction of vehicles on the
road.
The light rail stop was designed to be on ground
level, with almost no change in platform height for accessing to the tram;
this provides ease of use for staff and students alike whom are most likely
opposed to climbing stairs as a daily routine. Due to its position on Anzac
Parade, in front of the University Mall at UNSW, the light rail stop is
expected to be used by hundreds of patrons daily, thus was designed to house
large volumes of people providing adequate space to relax and study while
waiting for the next tram.
The road was narrowed to only one lane per
direction due to the overall purpose of public transport and the introduction
of the light rail. To reduce the number of vehicles on the road creating a less
congested Sydney. Replacing it with a multipurpose green space which can be
used by local community.
The slow rise in height for each of the curvilinear panels represents the turning of a page in a book. Justified by both it's location next to a university and the famous Book of Knowledge roof at UNSW. Thus this structure became dubbed as The Pages of Learning.
The inclusion of the park allows the creation of 'usable space'. This allows patrons waiting for a tram to either relax, study or have fun. Providing social interaction to the local community.
The curvilinear glass panels inspired by Zaha Hadid's architectural designs provide sustainability to site along with the inclusion of the park with the use of natural lighting and renewable resources (wood).
Natural lighting is one aspect of Ma Yansong's concept of environmental symbiosis, as the shelter provides sunlight to users. Another aspect in the parks integration with the light rail stop, creating the sense of 'usable space'.
